Types of Residency Types in the United Arab Emirates

Since its establishment in 1971, the United Arab Emirates has been dedicated to providing comfortable and secure residency for expatriates while safeguarding their rights. To achieve this, the UAE has been continuously developing its residency system and committing to improving the living and working environment in the country, tailored to the individual circumstances of the expatriates.

In 2022, a comprehensive system for residencies and visas was introduced, along with a range of benefits that attracted those interested in living, studying, and working in the UAE. This includes various types of residencies such as regular, green, golden, and others, all aligned with the UAE's "Vision 50" principles to enhance its status as an ideal destination for living, working, and investing.

The UAE's residency system stands out for its simplicity and efficiency of procedures, as well as the significant advantages it offers to its holders. Some of these advantages include sponsoring immediate family members, opening a bank account instantly, obtaining a UAE driving license, and subscribing to mobile and home phone plans, among other services.

Here are some of the important types of residencies in the UAE:

Golden Residency: This type allows residents, expatriates, and their families to enjoy long-term residency without the need for an Emirati sponsor. It also grants 100% ownership of properties in the country, making it highly desirable. The golden residency in the UAE is valid for 10 years and can be renewed, with various categories available based on recent updates.

Green Residency: The Green Residency is part of the UAE's new residency system, granting residency to individuals independent of their employers or companies. This means foreign workers, investors, skilled professionals, outstanding students, and graduates can reside in the UAE without an employer's sponsorship.

The green residency includes several categories, such as skilled workers, freelancers, investors/partners, and students enrolled in educational institutions. Some benefits of the Green Residency include:

  • Facilitating the sponsorship of immediate family members, simplifying the procedures and requirements for obtaining residency permits for spouses, children, and first-degree relatives.

  • Raising the age limit for dependent children to 25 years old (previously 18 years).

  • Granting residency permits to children with disabilities regardless of their age.

  • Providing residency permits for unmarried daughters, regardless of their age.

  • Flexibility in extending grace periods up to 6 months after the expiration or cancellation of residency.

  • Offering similar residency validity for family members as the primary visa holder

Remote Work Residency: This type of residency allows individuals to live in the UAE and work remotely, even if they are not employed by a UAE-based company.

Retiree Residency: Retirees who are above 55 years old can obtain a five-year residency visa, which is automatically renewable if the necessary conditions are met. Foreign retirees can apply for this visa through the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, which has established specific requirements for issuing retiree residency visas in the UAE.

Employment Residency: This type of residency is granted to foreign workers upon employment in the UAE. It is the first residency issued to foreign employees once they are hired, and it provides them with legal rights to live and work within the UAE.

Student Residency: A visa for studying, training, or qualifying can be issued by educational institutions, research institutes, or government/private entities for temporary periods. The visa covers vocational training or work during the study period. The requirements for obtaining this visa depend on the specific educational program or training.

Family Residency: After obtaining any type of residency, an expatriate can sponsor family members for residency in the UAE, including spouses and children.
